Cass County, Texas, in the northeastern corner of the state, is a rural area with a rich history, scenic landscapes, and cultural heritage. Bordered by Arkansas and Louisiana, its county seat, Linden, lies in the south-central region, accessible via U.S. Route 59 and State Highway 77.
Spanning 937 square miles, Cass County features East Texas timberlands filled with pine, cypress, and oak trees. Its terrain ranges from rolling plains to hilly elevations, with Cusseta Mountain as the highest point at 632 feet. Numerous creeks, streams, and the Sulphur River nourish the land, supporting agriculture, forestry, and wildlife. The region’s humid subtropical climate brings hot summers and mild winters, fostering diverse flora and fauna.
Historically, the area was home to the Caddo Indians before being displaced by other tribes in the 1820s. French explorers arrived in the late 17th century, and the county, established in 1846, was named after Lewis Cass, a U.S. Senator who supported Texas' annexation. Cass County played roles in the Civil War and the timber boom, shaping its cultural and economic identity.
